Scope & Content |
Donovan Bailey interview, 25 June 2014. Born digital MP4, viewing time 00:17:29. 0:30 First love was basketball, not track and field, but in Jamaica track and field was as popular as hockey in Canada and kids would all find out what events they were best at and work at those at a young age. 1:40 Talking about 1991 and part time track and field; saw people he had competed against and beat in high school on national teams and believed he could be successful if he was serious about track and field 2:14 Coach gave him the tools to be successful and inspired him to take up full time track and field, pursuing his goals. 2:50 "In business, as in sport, you have to surround yourself with good people." You have to find people who are better than you to learn from; people make the mistake of surrounding themselves with the wrong people and don't achieve goals. 3:50 Disciple, focus, hard work, and staying true to himself, alongside surrounding himself with the best people allowed him to achieve his goals. 5:00 "I represent an incredible nation of people," talking about how proud he is to be a Canadian. 5:50 Winning was most satisfying not just because it showed success, but because it represented achieving a goal he had worked towards, a value taught to him by his parents. 7:20 He needed to use the same values and goal setting he had used in sport to overcome the challenge of a ruptured Achilles. 9:20 His experiences with pneumonia and being unable to breathe when it mattered most inspired him to give back to charities for those with asthma, who struggle to breathe all the time. 10:30 When the pressure was most intense, he realized that he had to give up on trying to control circumstance- the bombing in Atlanta the night before the race, the false starts- and really focus on himself and simply stay within himself and within his lane to allow himself to win. 10:50 The race with Johnson didn't cause him to feel the same sort of pressure as the Olympics, but it was still a moment when Canadians felt proud to be number one, and allowed Canada to feel like we were able to compete internationally. 14:00 He had many idols growing up and his success in sport allowed him to meet his idols 15:20 He learned discipline, hard work, focus, from his parents 16:27 We don't dream big enough- the same principles apply in sports and in every area of life, you dream big, think about being the best, not just okay, and you put in the work required to get there, and you can be the best. Values: Dedication, hard work, goal setting, focus, staying true to yourself, learning from others, excellence Subjects: 1996 Olympic Games, 100m, Bailey-Johnson 150m race, 4x100m relay, gold medal |
