Rick Hansen interview, 1 November 2006. Digitized MP4 from Sony 40 Advanced ME DVCAM. Two videos with a total viewing time of 00:56:29. 1 of 2; 00:11Introduction to Hall 00:36Childhood: outdoor hiking and fishing with family; helped to create a baseline conditioning as an athlete, sport became part of his life, infused with excitement of sport, about setting goals, having focus 01:40Sports idols: Bobby Orr, epitome of an exceptional athlete who is gifted and talented but has worked through adversity to achieve excellence and a great person 02:20Did you aspire to a life in sport: stated to focus and set goals to be on the national volleyball team and represent this country, passionate & commitment, at age 15, when accident happened he thought maybe his hopes and dreams might be shattered 03:01What kept you going: surrounded by friends and family who encouraged him to deal with his injury, to realize he was still the same person, loved sport, still could be an athlete, Bob Redford his coach got him back into the gym, learned about wheelchair sport, learned the definition of an athlete wasn't if you could use your legs or not, responded to role models who were outstanding athletes but in a chair, "I am still an athlete. All my dreams are still in front of me and it's time to re-engage 04:26On dealing with psychological problems: learned about wheelchair sport, had been focusing on this disability and what he had lost, role model in Stand Strong who was living life large, came to realize did not see disability in him or his manner, he was a whole human being, this rubbed off on him, sport can continue, introduced him to wheelchair sport, talks about first practise in wheelchair basketball and realizing he had a long way to go but in itself was inspiring and motivating, could see where the potential was, could see the athletic ability of the athletes and the sport and how competitive it was; it fired him up again, made him realized he could set goals again, as an athlete you learn how to set goals and deal with adversity, reframing the situation is the key to 90% of success, in the process applied skills learned before 06:44Goals set: goal setting has been so important if I'm going to get there, it isn't just going to happen, like everything in life going to have to work hard and persevere, be determined and set series of goals, most important to learn how to use the chair, it required skill, finesse, power and strength, did road and track work to build up conditioning, did drills for mobility, working on shooting from the chair 08:06Why basketball: played ball before injury, wheelchair basketball was incredibly well developed and competitive, an amazing sport, add different dimension, required thinking about using you head, arms, speed, positioning, an intellectual game, made transition in sport, entered into physical education at university, not just a sport but a discipline, learned about the human body, conditioning, training, also focused on equipment which is a big part of the sport 10:55On switching from basketball to marathon: represented Canada on the national team, in order to push the chair better did track work, met another track athlete and watched his technique, copied it and his speed increased, on the track it's an internal discipline as you are on your own, complimentary to a team sport, was doing fairly well and caught up to the rest of the track team, talks about the specific equipment needed for the track; had to make a choice, gave up other sports, decided to go into track and marathoning and find where his real strength was 14:01On the transition: one thing to train on the track, another to compete on the track and on the road, talks about the strategy of racing and drafting, anything over 800m not only racing the track and time but individuals and circumstances, talks about tactics, talks about conditioning in the marathon, constantly assessing the conditions and the opposition 16:54At what point did you think you could compete at the top level: coach Tom Frick told him to focus on his training regime, talks about innovation in training, at the BC Games he was winning and realized had a chance to take it to the next level, the sport itself was in transition, 3 dimensions of physical, psychological and mechanical, the chair was changing and finally became standardized, "when you are a bit of a pioneer yourself, you're pushing the edge of the envelope on training regime, on tactics, on drafting and also on being able to utilize the course to your advantage. And then you start thinking about the equipment to get maximum propulsion and glide", talks about chair variables 20:11 on funding: "you learn how badly you want it", not many resources, no matter what the obstacles in front of you, going to get to the goal, talks about how they went after funding which is a good skill in life, sometimes have the victim mentality of things don't happen for me so I can't happen, in reality if things don't happen you make them happen, you don't have to be the victim, psychological choice, makes the journey worthwhile, every victory & every defeat was a chance to grow 22:24How did the Man in Motion Tour idea take shape: supported and impacted by so many people on the journey, privileged despite obstacles and challenges, able to respond to that good will and go past challenges, living the dream, living life as best you can, when you receive that you can't help but be inspired to give something back, when you want to look to contribute you look at 3 things: where your strengths are and where your life experiences capture your imagination and your passion; when he travelled the work as an athlete had encountered obstacles and barriers and being discounted as a person, "Can I make a difference", take the dream of wheeling around the world and making it into a challenge and a mission, was at the peak of his athletic career, time to give something back and not just take, wanted to shatter barriers, idea formed in his mind and became a commitment, challenge in doing it, logistics of covering 34 countries and 4 continents with his team 25:50Balance organization and tour: thought at beginning would just do PR, had to accept the responsibility to be a leader, mobilize the team and be engaged, if don't have clear vision and stay involved people can shift the course and get off in different directions; do it with integrity, work hard at purpose, not just a physical journey, it was a challenge to remove barriers, acknowledge others and raise money 28:46On other countries: some countries could not be on the route because so challenging, some because of political situation, did 34 countries, still some countries where people with disabilities shut out of society, when you experience that feel grateful you are fortunate to be Canadian, even though we have a long way to go we have come a long way 31:09Highlights: China, seeing the way people responded, open, friendly, open to new ideas and concept about people with disabilities can lead, all he hoped to accomplish in that country; on a personal level wheeling on the Great Wall of China, it became the ultimate metaphor for the team, talks about the team concept, how they helped him up the steps 33:58Cultural highlights: no matter what the cultural or ideological differences, there is a uniformity of the human condition, incredible amount of good will and compassion and caring out there and people despite their differences can come together and share; that experience has profoundly affected and shaped his attitude, sense of optimism for the future, most powerful lesson, need to tell more stories of great feats of determination and compassion, those are the things that inspire us and give us hope; chance to experience different cultures and learn that people don't always see things the same way 37:01Sense of purpose: life continues to unfold, "life isn't a destination, it's a journey", new chapters every day; when finished thought the dream was done when in reality it was just beginning: making communities more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities so they are not considered second class citizens or different or special, they should be given the same rights and privileges and responsibilities as anyone else and finding a cure for spinal cord injuries, big dreams that are going to happen over decades; he realized after trying to getting back into training that his life had changed, time to shift energy and passion, not the same goal as two years earlier; live an authentic goal based on where the heart was, strength is about aligning yourself with your passions and beliefs, have goals there and not be distracted 40:19Sense of purpose or greater sense of goal: when first had the accident thought it was the worst thing that could have happened, now thinks it is the best thing that happened, would not trade his life for the use of his legs, forced to know the difference between being good at a lot of things and really focussing for excellence, came through obstacles, can apply to anything 00:01Greatest life lesson: "No matter what goal you set things aren't going to happen easily, no short cuts, if you really want to achieve a goal or a dream you have to do a couple of key things: pick something you are really passionate about, that your love and secondly you've got to really focus and apply yourself. You can aspire to anything. You got to get in the game. No matter what kind of sport you are in, individual or team, it is still a team. Nobody gets anywhere on your own. We are interdependent and require compassion and support of others to achieve our dreams. Take that as a privilege and a responsibility to give back and to appreciate what it takes to get there."; takes his rewards as a reflection of all the people who have helped him along the way, talks about those people 03:25On overcoming adversity: decide to move on from being crushed, can control our attitude, no one can make it for you, your choice to take away what value is there and see the beauty in that, continue to hold to attitude, hope and faith |
