Two videos with a total viewing time of 00:50:27. 1 of 2; 00:01Introduction to Hall 00:48How started shooting: used to take gun to school when 14, attended rural school, hunted on way home; used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot ducks and geese in the fall; served in Air Force for 25 years, while stationed at a base found clay targets and started shooting at them 02:29Was this a sport or pastime: pastime, did not really know what the future held for it, never set goals, just happened 02:46Did you play other sports: played hockey for the Air Force until injured and also baseball, very keen sportsman 03:11On respect for gun safety: nobody taught him that, just did what was right 03:34When got serious about sport: had shot with the Americans on the base, suggested he take out membership in Halifax Gun Club, competed in both open and closed (members only) classes and won both, didn't really know what he was doing, decision made that he should not have both prizes, saw this happen again and again, made him very determined 05:38On other competitions: started skeet shooting in Ottawa, went to tournaments in Montreal 06:23What skills make a good shooter: shooting with both eyes open very important because have twice the vision, have to be determined and practise a lot 06:40Difference between skeet and fixed target: fixed target use rifle with one bullet, skeet use 12 gauge shotgun with 600+ pellets that opens up at 21 yard range, gives you a 36 inch pattern, have to put that out in front of 4 inch clay target 07:29Did the skeet shoot automatically: no you call it, talks about position and "pull", high house and low house, have to shoot both and then go back on station and shoot double, sport developed in the US because they wanted to hone their hunting skills 09:01Did you hunt: did some hunting, stuck mostly with skeet because didn't want to upset his rhythm 09:57On bigger competitions: just kept on going, at one point was going to give up, was fighting people, friend said "you're better than that" and that was the nudge to keep going 10:41First international competition: Oslo, World Championships 1962, didn't know what it was, no practise before, same kind of target but it travelled faster, was a 3 second delay in the call, describes the shoot, won Silver in a shoot-off, much harder sport 12:18Did you consider yourself an amateur: was an amateur while he was still in the Air Force, compulsory retirement at age 47, became a professional then, went to same competitions, the pros were sponsored by the ammunition companies 13:37How long was your competitive career: 25 years, at age 62 took up cross country skiing and golf 14:22On hitting 2002 targets: used a 12 gauge, kept going and going, lot of pressure 14:46What are the mental skills: seemed to be part of him, always looking for competition in anything he did 15:09Did flying in the air force help: helped a great deal, trained to be a pilot, brought out whatever a person was made of 15:56On his book: when he joined CIL had a lot on information, had been making notes, was asked to write a précis, company provided a professional photographer; book "Hartman on Shooting" was targeted to way of shooting, did it on his own, had no coach, did his own gun work, went through 80 guns in his career 18:02Difference in guns: talks about differences between 410 and 12 gauge, today have better guns, targets, coaches, gun smiths, referees, etc.;
