These vidoes created by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in partnership with TSN and Quantum Media House share these stories. Transcript: As Canada's national museum of sport, we have a platform and an obligation to amplify Black voices, and share the lived experiences of Black Hall of Famers. Today we bring you the story of Ice Hockey Player, Herb Carnegie. Herb Carnegie was one of the best players to never play pro-league hockey. "Herb Carnegie plays on a line with his brother Ossie, and Manny McIntyre, the 3 of them get a lot of attention 'everybody wants to see them the forum wants to have them but they'll play in Sherbrook it's the top attraction in all of hockey.' - The Sherbrook tribune, November 16, 1945. Playing for the Sherbrook St. Francis the black line becomes a sensation Carnegie become one of the best players in the Quebec Senior Hockey League. He's voted his team's most valuable player 2 years in a row." Amazingly he went on to capture the MVP award for a third year. Despite this, Carnegie was never given the opportunity to play in the NHL. "Carnegie was told that the sole reason he never played in the NHL was quite simple, the colour of his skin." Unfortunately, it was even said by the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the time that he would "give $10,000 to any man that could turn Carnegie white." Despite facing this adversity, Carnegie finished an impressive ice hockey career, and went on to inspire youth and people everywhere. He founded the Herbert H Carnegie Future Aces Foundation, the Future Aces hockey school, as well as the Future Aces Creed, a creed meant to encourage people to live up to their full potential, which was embraced by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Toronto District School Board to support their social studies curriculum. He also wrote a book titled A Fly in a Pail of Milk: The Herb Carnegie Story that talks about his story and the adversity he faced as a Black man. We CAN do better, we WILL do better. |
