Scope & Content |
Glenn Hall interview, 18 October 2012. Digitized MP4, viewing time 00:16:04. 00:36How did you get started in hockey: played shinny as a child 00:55What positions did you play: forward, where he learned to skate 01:16Why did you change to goal tender: no one else wanted to play goal so he went in, found it an interesting position, it was even more interesting pre-mask "bobbing and weaving and staying alive"; was about 10-12 when started playing goal 01:44Role models: all the old goal tenders 02:03When did you decide you could have a career playing hockey: never knew that, loved playing the game when young, when old couldn't play at the level he wanted to be and that bothered him, "It's a fun game and is meant to be. If you're not having fun, whether 6 or 60, it should be fun" 02:40On go to the NHL: fellow junior player was asked to training camp and asked him to come along, "if they were going to have a puck and play hockey, I wanted to be there" 03:25Detroit training camp being held in Saskatoon which was nearby to Humboldt, they saw something they liked 03:49Played another 3 years of Juniors in Humboldt and Ontario, saw a lot of Detroit games 04:28On his rookie season: played his best hockey in Chicago, easier to play on a good team, Detroit was good defensively, then went to St. Louis with Scotty Bowman whose style was complimentary to the goalie 05:19On playing with the big stars: we got to know them as juniors, regular people, not hard to get to know or like them, it was a natural situation, they took him as being one of their team mates, still friends to this day 06:25On not wearing a mask, interviewer suggests it was a certain amount of courage, bravery or stupidity: all 3, certainly the latter; remarks that they didn't shoot the puck as they do today and considers Bobby Hull the hardest shooter; 07:05On the butterfly style: prior to that they were stacking the pads and going feet first and keeping their head out of the way; he found he could butterfly and protect the lower corner, the so-called experts said it could not be done, obviously you can; common sense on how the butterfly entered into it, some goalies would kneel but no benefit in kneeling, you have to swing them out; (08:08) "I didn't care if it caught on. I knew I could stop the puck that way. I was interested in stopping the puck." 08:21On winning the Stanley Cup with Chicago: great winning it, that wasn't the best team they had in Chicago, "I enjoyed playing hockey and it's more fun when you win" 09:00On playing in Chicago: ten great seasons and "I loved every minute of it" 09:10Wages: jokes about getting "a buck an hour" 09:21On playing in St. Louis: the ownership was great; Scotty Bowman unbelievable, talks about the importance of the trainers; that expansion year was the first time he was ever offered a raise 10:30Is there any one save that is special: talks about if lost big numbers would deliberately let pucks in during scrimmage in order to tease the managers 11:26On playing in Calgary as a goal coach: offered encouragement to the goal tenders, talks about Mike Vernon being a really good goal tender, offered some "little tips" 12:39You have impressive statistics, is there any you are especially proud of: being named first All-Star team on the 3 teams he played for 13:19On being inducted: "I did something I really enjoyed and that's why I am in the Sports Hall of Fame", tremendously complimentary especially with the people are in there in every sport and that's what makes it particularly special." 14:05On looking back, would you change anything: maybe the money, my first exposure to the NHL was when Sawchuk was injured, he was paid $87.00 a game at that time 14:41Advice to young players: get your foot in the door, play junior or college hockey and work hard and don't be afraid to sweat |
