Warren Moon Interview |
Scope & Content |
Warren Moon interview, 3 November 2009. Digitized MP4 from Sony 40 Advanced ME DVCAM. Viewing time 00:19:24. 00:31Childhood: grew up in Los Angeles, played all sports, mother got him involved in sports to get him out of the house, to play with other boys and to have some figures as role models in his life; his mother and 6 sisters at home, father had died; played baseball, basketball & football and liked them all 00:58Focused on football: more success at it, more challenging especially playing quarterback, baseball his best sport but it moved slowly for him, basketball his favourite but didn't have height, had a good arm from a young age and showed some leadership abilities 01:40Why quarterback? Started as a linesman and wide receiver, age 10 became quarterback, considers this position most challenging position in team sport, fell in love with it - you make the play, you make the right decision, lover the responsibility of being the leader, loved the pressure 02:22NFL: like any kid you have dreams and my dream was to play in the NFL and those dreams turned into goals and those goals turned into reality. 03:00High school to college: wanted a school that would use him to throw the ball, went to a junior college as the major colleges wanted to make him play another position, wanted to show people his skills as a quarterback 03:42Talks about the racial stereotype - could an African American have enough leadership skills to be a quarterback, had to keep proving himself 03:58Rose Bowl: had been recruited to a bigger college, the team got better every year, won the Rose Bowl in his Senior Year 04:58On Hugh Campbell recruiting him to the CFL: his dream and goal was to play in the NFL and had felt that in college he had done everything to get at least an opportunity to show that he could be but the teams wanted to change his position, weighed his options and chose the CFL because he could continue to play quarterback "a position that I love and a position that I was not going to give up", continue to improve, continue to develop his game 05:43What did you know about the CFL? Not a lot, knew there was an opportunity for African Americans quarterbacks to play, knew it was a viable option, a wide open game and had versatility 06:30What did Hugh see in you? Versatility: could throw, passes, scramble, saw the mental toughness 07:27On the differences in the field width: challenge that needed a strong arm, got used to it, "What it all boils down to, it was football, it didn't matter how wide the field, how many downs, what mattered was that you executed." 08:07On being part of the team: Edmonton had a veteran team, used other quarterback Tom Wilkinson as an asset, could add to the team 09:31Comparing CFL style to NFL: learning curve yes but not more difficult than the American game, talks about differences such as extra back, loved the wide open game, got to throw more than in college and that was what he did best 10:33Grey Cup: at first thought it was for hockey, quickly learned about it and how it was the team's goal to win it back, since they had lost the previous year 11:36Did you have a timeline? Signed 3 year contract, not looking ahead of that, at the end of the contract having so much fun signed on extension, would play as long as still fun and still a challenge and having success, he was only judged on what he did on the field and nothing else, found this to be a refreshing experience 12:24On going to the NFL: still burning desire to see how good he was against the best players in the world, had had a lot of success in Canada but not a challenge anymore, time to move on 13:44On adjustment back to NFL game: the philosophy of the game is not different, smaller field, still football, not a big adjustment since he had played that style all his life, learning curve in new players, new front office, but with Coach Campbell again 14:54Bringing strategies and plays from CFL: tried to incorporate, new offensive, learning pressure 15:43Greatest memory: winning the Rose Bowl in college because of what he went through in his early career, tough times, huge underdog at the time 16:25Role models/mentors: talks about his coaches - how they influenced him at the start of his career, how they had confidence in him, helped develop him 17:37"I think sports are great for young kids to get involved in because of all the good things that get to come along with it. You get to exercise, you get a chance to be in competitive situations which are going to help you later in life. I think the discipline that you have to show to be in sports is something that's going to help you all through your life. ... Just having the foundation of sport teaches you sportsmanship, how to work as a team." 18:36"Success is being able to accomplish the things that you set for yourself as goals"; need goal or how are you going to have something to shoot for |
