Class of 2019 Waneek Horn-Miller Acceptance Speech |
Scope & Content |
Length: 4:09 The 2019 Canada's Sports Hall of Fame Order of Sport Awards were held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, ON. Summary: Waneek Horn-Miller reflects on her journey to the Olympic Games, beginning with the inspiration she found as a child watching Alwyn Morris raise an eagle feather on the podium in 1984. That moment lit a fire within her, one that carried her through a challenging path marked by stereotypes, intolerance, and limited space for Indigenous athletes in sport. She honours the legacy of her ancestors—many of whom were denied opportunity due to residential schools and the Sixties Scoop—and the trailblazers who came before her. The most meaningful moment of her athletic career, she recalls, was seeing her mother and sister cheering for her at her first Olympic Games. Her mother’s pride, especially after years of struggling to support her dream, deeply moved her and gave new meaning to their shared journey. Now a mother herself, Waneek expresses profound gratitude to her mom for the sacrifices and belief that made her success possible. She dedicates her Order of Sport to her mother. |
