Ron Taylor, Order of Sport recipient, inducted in 1993, born in Toronto, Ontario, recalls how he started to throw a baseball at eight years old. He explains how he played for a minor league club by age 18 but that it was important for him to complete university and earn an engineering degree. After four years and receiving his degree, he transitioned to the major league. Ron believes "it is so important for a young person to realize if you do something you love, go after it." Ron describes winning the 1964 World Series and tuning everything out except for his catcher, Tim McCarver. Ron also recalls how he felt winning the 1969 World Series and how he met up with his good friend, Joey Archer, a former professional American boxer, at Archer's pub in the post-game celebrations. Ron talks about receiving his medical degree after retiring from baseball and having to prove himself before being admitted into the medical program. He had visited field hospitals in Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and during his visits, he became passionate about becoming a physician. Born digital MP4, viewing time 00:14:17. 00:00:07Ron Taylor - when he first realized he had a passion for baseball: when he was about 8 years old, he could not skate very well so instead he turned his attention to throwing a baseball; he got better at it over the years and that was how his journey in baseball started 00:00:28His parents were very supportive of him; they had some troubled times in their family and baseball was an important part of coming out of them 00:00:53His biggest challenge in his career as an athlete was coming down to Florida and making it in a minor league club at the age of 18; he did very well that year and his team ended up winning seventeen games; he wanted to finish high school and go to engineering school, however he would not have been able to stay with the team if he had done that; he decided to play in the minor league for four more years until he was finally offered to play in the major league 00:01:53He never had any big challenges in his personal life because he was fortunate enough to have enjoyed everything that he did; "I think it is so important for a young person to realize (that) if you do something you love, go after it because it will be good for you" 00:02:22A victory that stands out the most for him: the New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees to win the World Series in 1969; the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees at the 1964 World Series 00:03:18In Game 4 of the 1964 World Series, there were about 70,000 people watching in the arena and about 50 million people watching from the television; despite the number of people watching, the only thing that Ron could focus on was him playing catch with Tim McCarver 00:04:30On being part of the "Miracle Mets" during the 1969 World Series: the final game being held in New York made the experience even better for the team; everyone thought they all did a great job in contributing to the team's victory and that was celebrated afterwards; Ron met up with his good friend Joey Archer, a former professional American boxer, to celebrate at his pub; the celebration also drew in a lot of people in Archer's pub, which gave him a lot of publicity for his business 00:06:30After retiring from his baseball career, Ron went back to school to receive his medical degree; he returned to Toronto, his hometown, and he became the Team Physician for the Toronto Blue Jays 00:06:40On his baseball career preparing him for his career in the medical field: when he was playing in the major league, he took a trip to Vietnam on three occasions; he visited hospitals that helped patients who were injured from the war; during his visits, he felt a real passion that he wanted to become a physician 00:07:36During his interview to get into medical school, the doctor who was interviewing him did not believe that he was capable of being in medical school; after seeing his grades from engineering school, which were all A's, he was still hesitant; he told Ron to go back to school and if he could get the same grades again then they would consider his application, however there was still no guarantee of being accepted 00:08:54Values that were most important to him during his journey in baseball: the most important value he had was one of passion; "if you can be passionate about any discipline, you are going to succeed" 00:09:28Lessons or message that will help youth today regarding participation in sports: "we should realize that sports is a great piece of your life…but you should remember that there are always other areas in life that you can get into" 00:10:11What he could say to children about being active in sports today: "I think being active in sports is a terrific ability for friendships, for looking at things you can do in life" 00:11:03Advice to children who might be experiencing bullying today: "Bullying is a terrible, terrible disease both for the recipient and the giver"; children who are experiencing bullying should seek a professional who is used to seeing bullying and knows how it can be dealt with, as well as someone who knows how to make the child develop and have more self-worth 00:11:45What it means to him to have been inducted in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame: "I just think it is wonderful. I love Canada and I think it is one of the greatest countries in the world. To be mentioned here is wonderful for me and I appreciate it. I am happy to be a Canadian." |
