Craig Forrest Interview |
Interview Summary / Résumé d'entrevue |
Craig Forrest, Order of Sport recipient, inducted in 2015, born in Coquitlam, British Columbia, talks about his soccer career, his values, and who inspired him. Craig mentions that as a youth, he was on a successful U13 lacrosse team and, by chance, was recommended to play soccer. Craig's biggest challenge in his career and personal life was moving to England when he was 16 years old. Craig describes the two most memorable games: the first game he played with Ipswich after they had been promoted to the Premier League, along with the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup win with the Canadian Men's National Soccer Team. Craig explains that he is proud that he was able to be a successful soccer player as a Canadian when it is a sport that is more popular elsewhere in the world. Craig talks about the importance of teamwork and how his success in soccer is in part because of the ability of the team to work together. He also explains how teamwork was equally important while working as a broadcaster. Craig talks about the values important to him, and his message to youth is to believe in yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Craig explains how he was inspired by Bruce Grobbelaar growing up and had the opportunity to play against him in England. Craig also mentions being inspired by Canadian soccer player Bruce Wilson and his own father, who always believed in him. |

Craig Forrest interview, 29 June 2015. Born digital MP4, viewing time 00:15:55. 00:00:17Craig Forrest - he did not get involved in soccer until when he was about 12 years old; growing up in Canada, he played more "traditional" sports, such as hockey and lacrosse; he was a late starter in soccer considering he started at the age of 12 and he was not very good at it at first; being good at hockey and lacrosse and not soccer was frustrating for him, however he used that as a motivation to get better and to see how good he could become 00:01:55Biggest challenges that he encountered in both his career and personal life: he moved to England at the age of 16 to pursue his career in soccer, and he found that the biggest sacrifice was not being able to see his family; his mother had to get a job to pay for their phone bill because it was expensive at the time; being a Canadian in an environment that was predominantly British was a challenge; he had to be better than the other English players or at least be as good as them 00:03:03A game that was very memorable for him: when the Canadian Men's National Soccer Team won the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, it was a special moment for Craig because Canada had never won anything before in international soccer competitions; on a professional club team, getting into the Premier League was his memorable experience 00:04:03What he is most proud of in his career: being Canadian and making it in an environment that is predominantly European 00:05:39On approaching penalty kicks: penalty kicks give an opportunity for goaltenders to be a hero; "you have to let things happen as opposed to make things happen" 00:06:26He was only one of a handful of foreign players in the Premier League; the challenge for him were the eight years leading up to the inaugural of the Premier League; the transition went quite well when he finally made it to the Premier League 00:07:14In the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, they were ranked 12th of the 12 teams who participated; they put pressure on themselves so that they could prove to the people "who were supposed to be experts" that they were wrong; they felt pretty confident by the time they made it to the final against Colombia; the "stars seemed to aligned" and they ended up winning the Gold Cup; it was a special moment in his career and in his life 00:09:05He took on a career in broadcasting after retiring from playing; "I wasn't sure if I would be good at it, if I would like it, or if they would like me"; he did the broadcast for the 1998 FIFA World Cup with TSN; he enjoyed the experience but he also found it intense because there were a lot of preparations involved 00:10:10Values that were most important in his journey: he always tried to be honest; integrity was also important; hard work and thinking outside the box; "I got put in my place pretty quickly as a young boy and I think the discipline really helped me as well" 00:11:49Lesson or message that could help youth in their life today: "Believe in yourself"; "Prove that you can do anything, and you can do it anywhere you want if you stick to it"; "Find something you are good at and try something that challenges you…get out of your comfort zone, outside the box, and work really hard because without a good work rate you will not go anywhere" 00:12:55What it means to him to have been inducted in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame: "It means an awful lot to me, it really does…it is quite emotional in so many ways. I think it is the biggest opportunity for me to thank everybody that helped me along my journey, and that is very important to me because I have not been really able to do it publicly." 00:13:28The moment he realized soccer was what he wanted to do: when he was 13 years old, people told him that he had the potential to make it in soccer after he had been playing for a year; his inspiration was Bruce Grobbelaar, who was a goal keeper for the Vancouver Whitecaps and most prominently for the Liverpool Football Club in England; he hoped to play with him in the Premier League and he did; "standing next to my idol was pretty special" 00:15:03 Who inspired him the most: his father, who believed in him despite not knowing a lot about soccer. His father pushed him just hard enough. He was also incredibly inspired by Bruce Brobbelaar and Bruce Wilson (who is also in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame). |
