Kay Worthington Interview |
Scope & Content |
Kay Worthington interview, 15-16 October 2013. Digital MP4, viewing time 00:12:38. (1/2) 00:06Values: learned through the team, had a long career with lots of ups and downs, it's not so much the adversity but how you deal with the adversity and able to work with people, and how you pick yourself up and keep going (2/2) 00:15Life lessons: hard work, remain focused, in the face of adversity you keep going 00:37What would you differently: what I discovered when I crossed the finish line in Barcelona was that the reward was so much in the journey and not so much in the medal itself, the gift was the journey 01:15Did it feel a little sweeter because it took a little longer: I think I thought going into it that a medal was going to make a difference to me, that it was going to make me feel differently, that it was going to make me feel about myself differently, that I was going to be a different person and when I crossed the finish line I'm the same person, the reward is in the journey, the reward was the path, the reward was everything that went into getting here and that was a wonderful feeling to realize that, it was everything that had gone into that medal and on that day, it was all just that year's experience, it was all 3 teams, 12 years getting there, the reward was the journey 02:12What was the mood of the team going in: the coach had us focussed and businesslike and from day one of the Olympic training camp in January he spoke to us about being prepared for the unexpected, has us prepared as a group so very businesslike and focussed, he helped us to take the emotion out of it, even though it was a bit of an emotional time for us 03:01How special was it to win the Gold: had been on 3 previous Olympic teams, in the 1980's the East Bloc was paramount and when you competed it was for silver or bronze, not gold; so for this group of Canadian women to win a Gold medal for Canada was phenomenal and I am proud of all of us 03:49On replacing Jennifer: happened the night before the heats, so much as adrenaline, the boat was familiar, did have some panic but just kept calming myself down and thinking we had done this, Jen had previously been injured so had had to substitute in the boat, had some information, nevertheless, still had to go to the line and still have to execute, remember feeling nervous but as soon as you get the oar in your hand that's a familiar feeling and there's almost a release that come with being able to pull on the oar; felt a tone pressure (05:15) subbing for Jenny earlier was exposure, Al [coach] told her you are allowing the 4 to continue as Jenny can get better and the 4 can row for the Olympics, understood that was her job, when they said she was not going in felt that it was not how it was supposed to be, Jenny is supposed to be in this 4 06:06Is it more special because of that: at the team meeting the night before ultimately it was Jenny's decision and she made it for her team mates, she knew she wasn't 100%, Kirsten told her "We have confidence in you, we know we can do this with you" and that made such a difference to me, to know that somebody in the boat was, I know they all had confidence in me, but somebody verbalized it 07:11On the community: so much of the story is the development of the interaction in the months before, training and bonding, all 10 of us plus the coach, Al told us "if you have a problem with someone on the team, that that's what you have, You have a problem, do not bring it into the group", realized that an inability to get over an issue could destroy the group, it was remarkable how composed and supportive we were of each other, we recognized we were on a path and everybody had a job to do, no matter what role you had 09:05How special is it for all of you to be the only women's coxless fours rowing team to win a Gold medal at the Olympic Games: very special, still the Olympic champions, rowed from 1981 to 1988, talks about the generations of rowers and this being the 3rd generation of rowers and they won the Gold medal, it is a tremendous achievement for this group and for Canada and for the women who have watched and been able to go on and achieve because of what this group did 09:55On being inducted to the CSHoF: it's the pantheon of champions and I just can't believe I'm part of it, my childhood heroes are all here, to be standing among them is unbelievable 10:41Introduction to the Hall |
