Jim Young interview, 13 December 2006. Digitized MP4 from FUJIFILM M321SP Betacam SP. Two videos with a total viewing time of 00:46:21. 1 of 2; 00:54About football: talks about CFL, NFL fans, his pro career stated in the NFL, prefers Canadian football because you can do many more things 02:10Differences with CFL: motion, ball thrown more, started as a running back and became a pass receiver, talks about Bernie Faloney and being good friends, talks about Angelo Mosca 04:15How did you end up with BC: talks about the trade between BC and the Minnesota Vikings for Joe Kapp, ended up being a good trade for both of them 05:09Toronto had his Canadian rights and traded his rights to BC 05:27The original trade was going to be for Willy Fleming, the coach changed in Minnesota, did not want Fleming, when Kapp became available the trade was made 06:07On the NFL: hadn't thought of going to the NFL, he was a 3rd year draft pick coming out of Queens University, got a letter from Minnesota, had been scouted, signed because he got more money in his bonus, went to the camp and there were 18 rookie running backs, felt he was the best of them, got injured in his first year, 2nd year moved to wide receiver; learned both positions which saved him in the CFL 08:43Childhood: grew up in Hamilton, loved sports, heroes were the Tiger Cats and the Leafs, played high school hockey, by the time he finished high school football was going to pay for his education, went to Queens for his BA, was physically mature enough but needed those 3 years to grow into a pro player 11:14Idols: Tim Horton and Carl Brewer, wore #9 because Richard and Howe both wore it 12:09Told by Gordie Howe to play as long as you can because once you are done you will miss it; talks about the Tiger Cats like Faloney and Mosca 13:40On Angelo Mosca: became friends over the years, both hitters, Mosca told him he was "passing on the legacy" to him 14:38On being the first Canadian collegiate players to get drafted in the NFL: he was the first to play NHL games, signed as a free agent, able to negotiate a better salary, the CFL paid more than the NFL at that time 16:18Transition from NFL to CFL: in his last season in the NFL he was injured, had been a running back and learned to be a receiver; in the CFL called into the slot more than as a running back, more and more became a receiver and blocking, talks about blocking then and now, good for him to evolve, worked on speed and playing wide, ended up as a slot, good to play different positions because he got to stay in the league longer 18:55On the number of downs: they balance, talks about getting motion going, made for good CFL games, ball in the air more, more completions, more catches 20:24How many games did you play: 197 in the CFL, talks about missing a few because of injuries 21:15On Dirty Thirty: was playing against Hamilton, lost a close game, you play till the whistle goes, if someone is standing around deck him; talked about game with reporter Jim Taylor and they created the Dirty Thirty tag, later they co-wrote a book; just a fun tag 23:50On his injuries: you are going to get injuries in football, his shoulder caused him problems, played with one arm, learned to challenge the adrenaline on game day; talks about his injuries; talks about Russ Jackson being one of his heroes when he was growing up 26:09On his awards: won 2 Schenley awards for most Outstanding Canadian 27:10Most proud of: being a player day to day that could be relied on, workmanlike player; got to play 10 different positions 27:56On his awards and stats: loved to play, would still be playing if he could, learned different positions just so he could get to play 2 of 2; 00:25On his longevity: healed well, learned before the season started to do the work, came to camp in good shape, the longer you play the more need to come in better shape because they are looking to replace you so you need to learn to work smarter, harder; teach the defensive backs so that "you own them", a lot of it is still mental 02:25On the NFL: the 2 years were great, because of his shoulder injury would probably have had a shorter career there, wanted to come back to BC, had a chance in '72 to go to Atlanta or Baltimore, got paid similar amount to stay, no regrets 04:16CFL/NFL: rules allow you to do more things in the CFL, can generate more offense, bigger field, extra receiver, make for more interesting football 06:34Introduction to Hall 07:57Life lesson: in sports either you produce or you don't, in life either you produce or you don't, in sports if you do produce you can continue, the ones who are producing get to continue and you get to play 08:44What did you learn from this: if you do it well you can, when you're done start producing or else 09:02On winning or losing: life is winning and losing but winning is more important because you either learn to win or lose; team is a combination of individual and team, want to learn to win 09:49On dealing with not winning a Grey Cup: difficult, have goal every year, personal accolades cannot compete with winning your goal but there are lots of little goals along the way that you can accomplish and come out feeling reasonably good about yourself, can't let it destroy you, only one team wins 11:03On coaches: had some coaches who were good at making you feel good about producing, talks about Jackie Parker, he worked hard doing well for you; teaches you in life that you can take a lot of criticisms and still work hard and produce and not let it destroy you 13:05On kids participating in sport: he tells parents "Sports for kids is for fun. Stop yelling at them. Stop pushing them. Let them go out and have fun. Encourage them. Be there for them ... It gets to be work soon enough." 14:00What do you tell kids: go out, have fun, play all the sports 14:37On a funny moment: most the fun thing was creating the Dirty Thirty out of nothing, it was creating an image, working with Jim Taylor who was creative, still having fun 15:25On being inducted in the CSHoF: never thought he would make it, few football players in it, honour to be included 16:17Shows suspension helmet and talks about it |
