Kirsten Barnes Interview |
Scope & Content |
Kirsten Barnes interview, 20 September 2006. Digitized MP4 from Sony 40 Advanced ME DVCAM. Viewing time 00:10:03. 00:12Values: as a child enjoyed sport and knew she was going to do something special; being part of a team was something I really valued, being able to share the experiences together was really special 00:36What was it that made your team special: uniqueness of the personalities, the characters that exist within the entire team, particularly with our 4, from different backgrounds and different experiences in life 01:05Life lesson: be passionate about what it is that you do, to really enjoy and have fun with your sport 01:55What would you do differently: knowing what I know now from sport psychology, I may have gotten to know my team mates in a slightly different way, more than just as team mates; I look as some of the tools I use now with athletes and wonder what it would have been like if we had done some stuff together as a team, I would be curious now to know more about ourselves as individual people knowing what I know now 02:27What was the mood of the team: excited, undefeated going into the Olympics, thrilling buildup in Europe, race in some regattas that summer, thrilling to go in as World Champions from the year before and to go in undefeated 03:15With Kay replacing Jennifer, was it a smooth transition: the transition was absolutely smooth, there was no doubt in any of our minds what Kay would bring to the crew and what she was capable of, I think it was emotionally hard because we were changing a crewmate that we had been with on this journey for so long, but in terms of doing what we needed to do and achieve what we worked to achieve, it was a smooth transition 03:45How special was it to be the first Canadian women to win a rowing Gold: hugely special, can't replace that with anything else, exciting - there is a little bit of you, if you are going in with that goal and when you achieve it, there was a little bit of relief as well 04:11Did you feel pressure: the pressure was going to be what we created in ourselves, I felt more excited and nervous than nervous and excited 04:33On the community: team work was a huge part, certainly for myself, in what we did and how we communicated and worked together to really bring something special to ourselves and our country played a huge part in our being a community of people 05:10What did your team learn from the Gold in the fours to help win Gold in the eights: pretty routine in how we got ready for the next race and her lasting memory is standing near the boats and being told them had 24 hours before the next race, usually did not have that long, would have time to rest before racing the next day 05:59Did you get any time to absorb that first Gold medal: there was a little bit of time but short and then back into preparation stage for the eights the next day 06:17On being inducted to CSHoF: huge honour, wonderful appreciation of what you achieved for your country and it's nice to be recognized 06:52How do you see it now, as opposed to then - the winning and the accolades: sometimes feels like yesterday, it takes me back to the powerful emotions and the thrill of it all, it is really quite close to your heart and your mind 08:28Introduction to the Hall |
