Peter Mahovlich Interview |
Scope & Content |
Peter Mahovolich interview, 5 November 2008. Digitized MP4 from Sony 40 Advanced ME DVCAM. Viewing time 00:28:50. 00.54Childhood: played hockey, baseball; played as kids, not organized like today; outdoor sports; moved to Toronto when Frank joined the Leafs, then played minor league hockey and baseball, went to St. Michael's, drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the first ever draft, played Junior A for 3 years; idols - brother Frank, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Jean Beliveau 04:10Highlight of his career was to play on Team Canada '72, represent country in a very historic event, "we didn't recognize how important it was going to be, how demanding it was going to be, how historical it was going to be. We just thought it was going to be an 8 game exhibition series that we were going to win handily and easily, get it over with and continue on. Surprise!" 06:23Training camp: on being with players usually considered opponents - never had a bond with other teams, never associated with other players, at that time the player was usually with an organization from the time he was drafted until he retired; 1972 was unique in that they came together as other than an All-Star Game did play with each other, no camaraderie among the players, translated into some of the games, especially Game 1, the fans were cheering their favourite players and people forget we were just representing Canada, after the debacle in Vancouver Phil (Esposito) spoke out and said what had to say and everybody realized that we were all there and doing one thing only: representing Canada and not the NHL, not Montreal, not Boston, but Canada; when went to Russia, everybody got it, the players and the fans, received so many telegrams - "tells you why Canada is so great. Here we are down 3 games to 1, with 1 game tied and after 4 games the telegrams of support said good luck, don't worry about it, they had the telegrams plastered on the walls; talks about the 3000 fans in Moscow: "You wouldn't know there were 8,000 Russian fans but you sure knew there were 3,000 Canadian fans there. That's what makes you proud, that's what the whole issue was about." 09:45On playing with his brother in Montreal: age difference so never really associated as brothers for a long time, when Peter turned pro Frank was a sounding board, by the time of the Montreal trade Peter had matured as a person, they became friends, on the same level and teammates for Team Canada 11:56Game 1 of the Series: disaster, talks about the euphoria in the first few minutes and then things went wrong, no prior preparation to what to do if they won or lost, talks about the tradition of shaking hands with your opponents at the end of a Stanley Cup series, did not know they were supposed to do that with the Russians so they looked like spoiled kid and unsportsmanlike 13:30Talks about Game 2: critical game, fortunate to get the victory, an emotional roller coaster but if they had won the 8 straight they would not be getting the accolades 36 years later 14:41Game 2: talks about the game, being up 2 goals and then being scored on on power plays, talks about how he scored and the Russian goalie Tretriak being surprised by his move; did not get to keep the puck 18:17Talks about being in Europe: the team became closer, difficult situation to make it work, as we went on we grew; still friends with many of his teammates 21:51Game 8: did not hear Henderson call to him, was tired from his shift as his was on his first line, before had been used to kill penalties, he went off and Henderson came on and scored, did not know they scored until the players jumped up and off the bench 22:23About Henderson's goal: credit to Paul for that winning goal and ones in Games 6 & 7, he scored tremendous individual goals, "those scenarios are never set up unless you have a team in front of you and with you, and that's what it was. And we ended up being a team at the end. Not just a collection of players from different teams. When it was all said and done, we were Team Canada." 23:24On playing in Prague: a lot of the players were exhausted, but others wanted to play because they loved the game, "it was a passion, for us it wasn't a job" 24:55Facing off against those teammates: intensity still there in trying to win a Stanley Cup, talks about playing against Bobby Clarke and Phil Espositio 27:12On what means more - the Stanley Cup or the Summit Series: still value the Stanley Cup a tremendous amount, had won it in 1971 before the Series, "I value this much more", living in Canada, understood what was going on politically in the country, "it galvanized this country more than any political statement could ever make. You take a simple sporting event and throw it into the mix, at that time maybe 25 million people on the same path, it's fabulous." 28:14Spare goalie was Eddie Johnson |
