Gary Cowan interview, 16 October 2013. Digitized MP4, viewing time 00:19:09. 1 of 2; 00:28Played baseball as a child, made choice to play golf 01:21Values: golf is a sport where you've got to be honest, no but yourself to blame if you hit a bad shot or a good one, you are on your own and it is the same in life, it's about honesty 02:44Life lesson: the harder you work the luckier you'll get if you work at your game, if you are doing something wrong get assistance, the hardest thing that people do is want instant gratification, that's not going to happen, do it every day for 30 days and it gets ingrained in you 04:14What would you do differently: I don't think I would do anything different, did not have a lot of schooling, wanted to play golf, "that's how I got started but I had the desire and when you have the desire you can overcome a lot of things, the main thing is that work, work, work does it every time" 05:50How did you get involved in golf: at age 7 or 8 read a news article about the winner of the Canadian Junior Championship and thought he would like to do something like that, was playing baseball then, 2-4 years later followed the story of Ben Hogan and that got him going 06:44Mentors: talks about the pro coach at the golf club, Lloyd Tucker, who was interested in anyone who wanted to work and if I wanted to work, he would work with me, so I made sure I worked to get him to go further with me; I've had a lot of lessons later on, talks about Stan Leonard giving him pointers on his swing, everyone is a little different, right or wrong I did what someone had suggested and worked it out 09:58On his amateur status: talks about how he earned his living in life insurance, turned pro in 1990 for the senior tour, "times had changed" 10:49What golf achievement are you most proud of: talks about the tournaments he won, golf comes in stages, winning the Canadian Juniors was very important at the time but then you keep going to better things 11:45Why do you believe you were successful: lucky, worked hard, you have to work hard, when I wasn't working in the insurance business I was practising, loved doing that 12:41What training did you do: I just played golf and hit golf balls and the more you hit golf balls the stronger you get 13:44On being consistent: just play and try to get better, [did you have a natural gift], no, I worked a lot, had a short and powerful swing 14:42His main goal was to beat the Americans, felt good, that is where I got my motivation from 16:26Do you love training: it was a passion, when you hit balls you aim at something and try to get balls to either side, that was the fun part 17:02On goals: never had a goal and just played golf, and what will be will be, perseverance, if you're going to win you will, when he joined the pro tour it took time for him to realize he was a pro and not to waster shots but his mind still said the same thing as before 18:17On being inducted: wonderful, when you're one of the best in a sport people look up to you and say I want to be one of the best in a sport, wants to be an inspiration to others, many of his idols are in the Hall 2 of 2Introduction to Hall |
