Catriona Le May Doan interview, 22 November 2006. Digitized MP4 from Sony 40 Advanced ME DVCAM. Viewing time 00:29:12. 00:40Introduction to Hall 01:03Childhood: played ringette, soccer, ballet, track and field 01:21Why speed skating: followed her older sister into the sport, loved it right away 01:47Idols and role models: Terry Fox, doing his run when she was just starting, example of perseverance and what can be done and somebody never giving up, continues to be her role model 02:18How did you start in the sport: started doing both short track and long track, start the season in short track, as soon as it was cold enough to make ice on the outdoor oval did long track, Olympic Oval built in Calgary, wonderful to skate inside 03:10First time on skates: was on short track skates which are higher in the ankle, kept tripping on the crossovers, the straightaways were OK, was 10 years old, pick yourself up and keep going 03:51When did you get serious: did well in age group right away, a few year later started watching the older skaters more and being aware of the Olympics and where you could go, in her early teens thought "how far can I go" 04:33On competitions: the national events were good and competitive, skated against the top women in the country, really pushed her, the Canada Games also pushed her and gave her Games experience 04:59What distances were you skating: every distance in both long and short track, really have to have young athletes experience everything 05:20When did you figure that you were meant for sprinting: was in her late teens, when she reached the national team, knew she was more of a sprinter, as a junior have to do all the distances even though you know you are a sprinter 06:00Approach to races: mentally always getting very nervous, very driven inwardly, not competitive with other people but with herself, challenge with every race was to improve a time but could only do that by improving little technical points, approached every race with a technical goal, knew if she reached that goal her time would be faster, tough way to be, the only thing that satisfies you is perfection 06:48Did you use visualization: never could visualize, if she tried was distracted by other things, put key words down on a piece of paper and saw those words 07:31Off-ice preparation: talks about preparing her skates, hand sharpened by the skaters, took care of her own skates, very delicate, the blade very thin, "our skates are our lives" 08:33Did you use video: hated watching herself skate even when it was a great race, was important to do, watched in slow motion to see things that she liked and didn't like, learned from it 09:37On the 1994 Olympics: was her second Olympic Games so she had Games experience, ranked 5th in the world, her goal was to win a medal but didn't 10:29On learning from the experience: Lillehammer was a good learning experience, learned about herself, to get back to the basics of sport, reminded herself about the passion she had, what she loved about sport and the Olympics, learning about others, herself, success and failure and about perspective, good thing but tough lesson, became the athlete and person that she is today because of the experience there 11:30On Nagano: going in as the favourite, the team was doing well, expected to win the 500m but 4 years earlier had fallen, knew it was not guaranteed, just wanted to have the best race she could, tough competition, Olympics bring out the best in everybody, it was the first time that 2 races were held for the 500m, lot of stress and pressure, winning a whirlwind that hit her much later 12:49On having Bart there: having a support team around yourself really helps, tough because it was not normal situation as at home, he was the buffer for her 13:37On Salt Lake City: was under more pressure than she realized at the time, nobody had ever defended a Gold medal in Canada, was the flag bearer, Jeremy's fall - all these things were added pressure, want to do it for sport, country and family; have to deal with it, race day was scary but a relief 15:12On the pressures: the 2 races were 24 hours apart, nervous on race day, the routine helped, did not step it up on the first race as other skaters did, in the second race was up against a German girl who had stepped it up and wanted to beat her for the Gold, knew if she had the same race as before she could win the Gold, "everything you've done over 23 years comes down to 37 seconds", concentrated on little things, technical things 16:45On coming home: great, the Olympics were exciting, wonderful, proud of your country, became a public figure so no privacy, realized she was a public figure but also just a normal person, felt the reaction Jeremy was getting was tough, wanted to celebrate but wanted him to celebrate too 18:28Greatest moment: tough to pick one, different things she is proud of - Salt Lake City and dealing with the pressure and being able to defend the Gold, very proud of the fact of being consistent for so many years, no race was ever perfect, her favourite moments were the team atmosphere and training camps 19:50Influence of family: her family had the attitude "if you want to be doing this, then great; if not, walk away"; no pressure from them, so supportive, always there for her, life outside of sport too, had balance, was a speed skater but it didn't define her 21:30On her children: daughter already on skates, is determined person, want to give her every different aspect of sport, open the doors and then step back 23:18on who is faster: a hockey player or a speed skater: it would be a good race for the first 10 meters, the hockey players just can't keep up with speed skaters 24:27Voice over for web site |
