Donald 'Don' Jackson Interview 2014 |
Interview Summary / Résumé d'entrevue |
Don Jackson, Order of Sport recipient, inducted in 1962, born in Oshawa, Ontario, talks about his figure skating career. Don explains that he started skating in 1948, the year Barbara Ann Scott won Olympic Gold in St. Moritz, Switzerland, which inspired him to want to do the same. Don explains, "If you love it, if it's your dream, do it." Don talks about winning the Canadian Men's Junior Championship at 14 years old and how he had to move away from home at a young age after his hometown rink burned down. Don describes how Otto Gold became his coach at the Minto Skating Club, followed by Pierre Brunet and Ed Carelli. Don tells how Dick Button, the first man to perform a double Axel was influential in his career. Don also describes successfully performing the triple Lutz in competition for the first time in 1962, the first time ABC filmed the World Championships. Don describes his transition from amateur sport, where he could not accept gifts, to travelling with the Ice Follies. He explains that his parents and younger brother made sacrifices while he was skating competitively, and it was not sustainable after 1962. His message to youth is, "Everyone falls on their face… if you stop falling, you stop learning, so keep on pushing yourself." " |
