Kathy Kriener-Phillips interview, 14 December 2006. Digitized MP4 from FUJIFILM M321SP Betacam SP. Three videos with a total viewing time of 00:57:48. 1 of 3; 00:01Introduction to Hall 00:40Childhood: grew up in Timmins, nearest ski hill was 12 miles outside of town, it was a small hill with rope tows, her Dad was involved in the development of the hill and as a family they helped 01:42Started skiing at age 3, was the culture she grew up in, big part of their lives, started racing at a young age, to make things more interesting coming from a small hill and got to travel in Ontario and Quebec, became a focus at a young age and continued to be a focus, did not take part in other sports, did some swimming and water skiing, still water skiing today 04:52Evolving into competitive skiing: new challenge, something to try to accomplish, did well at young age, got on the circuit, competed at the Pontiac Cup at age 11, coaches noticed her, won the downhill at age 12, made the national development team, trying to keep up with older sister Laurie, attended ski camp in BC, at age 13 made the Can-Am team (National B team), travelled North America and went to training camp in Europe, made the World Cup team at age 14, youngest on the World Cup team and youngest at the 1972 OWG, early bloomer, peaked at age 18 in 1976 08:55Positive feedback on skiing: her father was a doctor, worked on the ski hill as a volunteer, he was the first team doctor for the National team, passed on information to her; the local and then the national coaches believed in her and helped her to believe in herself, father was the team doctor at the 1968 OWG, came home with stories of Nancy Greene winning the Gold medal, start of the dream to win an Olympic Gold medal herself 11:05Point of belief: start of the dream at age 10; talks about the lead up to the games in 1976, took some reflective time and went through a mental process, knew her sister and Betsy Clifford were retiring after the season, the team had not had a great season and were experiencing a morale low, talks about the process, felt being first was realistic, knew she could win, in the start gate it was a matter of deciding she was going to win, what are you thinking about, being prepared, relaxed, ready to go, not over thinking and analysing, being smooth and flowing, 'focus on the outside ski and look ahead' became a mantra for her, never lost her focus, had a sense of confidence and knowing 15:02Was there a point where you believed you were good enough to compete: talks about race in Alaska where she and her coach believed she go podium, finished 3rd 16:26On the Super GS: loved free skiing through the gates, kind of turns she like to do when skiing, also same turns in water skiing, had done a lot of water skiing before 1976 and believed it helped her with the rhythm 17:31 Comparing runs in 1976 and 1974: talks about the 1974 race and the flow, no distractions, first win, age 16 18:58On 1976 race day: had the #1 bib, had had it 4 times that year and had not done well, prepared mentally for that number so it did not bother her to get it 2 of 3; 00:12There was fresh snow on the hill, went to training area, because of the powder she decided to free ski to feel good on her skis and feel balanced and centered; she was in her own world when looking at the course, the coach respected that and did not interfere, focused while on the life to accept what happens whether she won or was 16th, confident she was going to win, talks about the race 04:28On the fresh snow: accept what is in front of you and give it your best shot 05:06On her time: knew she had a good run, when the top racers were behind felt it was possible, waited until #30 came down just to make sure 05:55She watched the time and just hung out with the other girls during the other runs 06:28Jungle Jim Hunter, member of the men's team, jumped over the fence and hoisted her on his shoulders, pretty special moment, photo of that in the Hall, then met the media 07:18On the podium ceremony: actually two, first was for the World Championships in the town and the second for the Olympics in the arena; remembers the Canadian fans, surreal moment; her parents were in Timmins 08:35Had 11 years on the World Cup, stayed 5 years after 1976 and attended the 1980 OWG in Lake Placid 09:46The following season: pressure as the Gold medallist, her master's thesis in sport psychology was on the effect of success on an athlete's subsequent performance, the hardest thing to do is repeat a performance, pressure either from yourself or other people, focus when she won was on the process vs. thinking now I have to win again, focus has to stay on the process and not on winning, talks about the results of her study, feels the Europeans come ready to win, challenge to deal with pressure to stay on top 11:41Did you crave to win at that level again: was satisfied she reached her goal to win Gold, needed to make another goal and didn't 12:24What would you do differently: should have gone through the goal making process and set next goal, some of the drive was taken away because she hadn't gone through that process 14:43Were you an anomaly in that you weren't one of those intensity driven people: never saw herself as very competitive person, almost an art form, to prove to herself she could do it, did not need to make a statement to the world, don't have the same drive as others 15:51On being a naturally talented skier: was her strength as well as a weakness, allowed her to have finesse on snow, didn't have mental trainers then to help with focus, very young, sister was driven and a hard worker, good to be on a team because they pushed her 17:39On having an easy going manner: she always was like that, didn't get stressed or nervous, was really relaxed, being relaxed under pressure huge to being successful, one of her strengths 18:46On her skill set: skiing was the right sport for her, physically built for it, preferred an individual sport over team sport, combination of so many things came together to reach that level of success 20:01On having a slightly different disposition: never really articulated it that way, talks about personality types in sport and was traits are most common, she may not be typical of the ski racer type 21:28Can you over analyze: she tries to work with athletes on empting their mind, on being in the present moment, not thinking about the past or future, makes you more relaxed, less nervous and calmer; when totally connected to the task at hand going to be more in state where things are happening automatically; talks about improvement in time by changing focus 23:50Vision at age 10: when her Dad came back in 1968 and thinking that is what she wanted to do 24:27On having children: medal pales in comparison to having children 25:11Most proud of: highlight was the Gold medal in 1976, winning her first World Cup race at 16 in the GS and the 3rd place at the World Cup in Alaska, also winning a downhill at age 12 25:57Other disciplines: GS was her best, ranked at one time in the top 10 in all 3 disciplines, did better in the more technical downhill, loved to go fast 27:12No injuries from skiing 27:39On a natural ability: had a good sense of balance, recovered near falls, she did not know how to fall 28:40On being a young entrant: trying to keep up with her older sister 3 of 3; 00:04Talks about the women's side in alpine skiing, real tradition of winning with 4 Olympic champions and 5 World Champions, the connection is seeing someone before you achieve that success and up close and realize I can do it too 01:27Life lesson: value of discipline, learn how to work hard, set goals, be persistent, carries over into life in general 02:14Winning/losing: winning is the celebration, it is less of a learning opportunity, you are on top of the world, learn more from the valleys of life, your struggles make you be more creative to try something else, energy from down times, now grow for the future and learn 03:34Idols: Nancy Greene had a huge impact on her life, was a current team member of Betsy Clifford, used to seeing Canadians on the podium, that's what you are shooting for 04:36On participation vs. winning: different reasons to be in sport and competitive is just one of them, benefits to being active, healthy lifestyle, learn skills, enjoyment, great outlet, gets rid of stress 05:28On being inducted: talks about being inducted, pivotal moment of accomplishment, leaving a legacy 06:23Talks about her Olympic and World Championship medals and the 3rd place trophy from Alaska |
